Toyota's Hydrogen Fuel Cells Are Now Certified for Commercial Use

Toyota Hydrogen Solutions earns ANSI/CSA FC 1 and FC 6 certifications, unlocking commercial stationary fuel cell deployment across North America

Toyota certified hydrogen fuel cell generator system for commercial power applications

Toyota Hydrogen Solutions has obtained two key safety certifications for its stationary hydrogen fuel cells in the United States, a development the company says will reduce the cost and complexity of commercial adoption. The ANSI/CSA FC 1 and FC 6 credentials, awarded on 29 April, make Toyota's units among the first to qualify for stationary generator applications under North American standards.

The approvals open a commercial pathway to sectors where reliable, low-emission power is increasingly a procurement requirement. Hospitals, data centres, and remote facilities operating under strict emissions or noise regulations are among the primary markets.

Hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. The only by-product is water vapour. Unlike diesel generators, they operate quietly and produce no direct carbon emissions, which can ease regulatory approval in urban or sensitive environments.

"The certifications create a significantly lower barrier to adoption for businesses looking to invest in more environmentally responsible power generation," said Thibaut de Barros Conti, vice-president of Toyota Hydrogen Solutions.

That matters to procurement teams in regulated industries where certified equipment reduces legal and administrative risk.

Toyota is working with Rehlko, an energy resilience company, to integrate its fuel cells into one-megawatt generator systems. The partnership puts an established manufacturing partner behind what had previously been a technology in demonstration phase.

Challenges remain. Green hydrogen supply is limited across much of the country, and distribution costs continue to undercut economic competitiveness against conventional generators. Full cost parity is unlikely in the near term.

Toyota Hydrogen Solutions plans to show the certified system at ACT Expo 2026 in Las Vegas from 4 to 7 May. The event is expected to draw energy infrastructure developers and commercial fleet operators who will see a fully compliant hydrogen generator for the first time.
